Chapter 1
The Courage of Half Baked Faith
Pastor James Cole
You are sitting there right now, maybe, uh, gripping the steering wheel on your way into the office, or looking at a screen under fluorescent light, and under all the noise of the morning, there is this... this quiet ache. A secret thought you would never say out loud in a Sunday school class: *I am just not sure I really believe this today.*
Pastor James Cole
You feel like a spiritual fraud, don't you? Like everyone else has this, uh, this ironclad, hundred percent certainty, and you are sitting there holding three cracked pieces of hope, hoping no one notices. I, I think so many of us spend our lives trying to fake a complete, unshakeable confidence because we think God only answers the prayers of the totally convinced. But... but look at what actually happens in the Gospel of Mark, chapter nine.
Pastor James Cole
There is a father there. His child has been suffering terribly, having seizures, falling into fire and water, just absolute agony for years. And this exhausted dad brings his boy to Jesus' disciples, and... and they fail. They cannot help him. So by the time Jesus actually shows up, this father is at the absolute end of his rope. He is tired, he is heartbroken, and frankly, his faith is bruised down to the bone. He says to Jesus, "If you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us."
Pastor James Cole
And Jesus says, "If you can? All things are possible for one who believes." And then the father cries out those famous words. He says, "I believe; help my unbelief!" Think about that for a second. It is such a raw, brilliant moment. In fact, it is both a statement of faith and an admission that our faith is far from perfect.
Pastor James Cole
He does not put on a pious face. He does not pretend to have it all together. He, he just lays out his messy, broken reality right at the feet of Christ. And what does Jesus do? Does He say, "Well, come back when you reach ninety percent assurance"? Does He scold him for having lingering doubts? No. He heals the boy. Right then and there. Jesus receives that messy, desperate, half baked trust and takes action on it.
Pastor James Cole
In my twenty years of congregational ministry, I, I cannot tell you how many times I have stood in late night hospital hallways, listening to the hum of heart monitors, watching family members stare into the silence. And I have to be honest with you... there were nights when I stood there as the pastor, holding someone's hand, and my own faith felt paper thin. I felt the awful weight of the silence. I prayed, and I felt... well, nothing.
Pastor James Cole
For a long time, I thought those moments made me a failure as a minister. But what I learned in those dim hallways is that holding out a bruised, fragile faith to God is not failure at all. It is actually a profound act of trust. It means that even when you are confused, even when you feel empty, you are still choosing to reach toward Him instead of walking away into the dark.
Chapter 2
Bringing Your Messy Trust into Thursday
Pastor James Cole
So let us reframe what faith actually is today, right here on a mid week Thursday. Faith is not the complete absence of doubt. It never was. Faith is simply the direction you take your doubt. Do you turn away in shame, thinking God cannot handle your questions? Or do you take your cracked, fragile, uncertain heart and place it directly into the hands of Christ?
Pastor James Cole
I want to give you a very simple practice for today. Let us call it the Honest Hand. Sometime today... maybe while your coffee is brewing, or during an afternoon pause at your desk, or while you are stuck at a red light... open one hand, flat on your lap. Picture one specific situation right now where your hope feels exhausted. A relationship that is strained, a health scare, a financial stress, or just a deep spiritual dryness that will not go away.
Pastor James Cole
Look at that open hand and whisper those six words from Mark chapter nine: *I believe; help my unbelief.* Release the pressure to pretend. Stop trying to muster up an emotion you do not feel right now. Just hand Him the truth of where you are.
Pastor James Cole
Let us pray together for a moment before you get back to your day.
Pastor James Cole
Heavenly Father, for the person listening right now who feels like their faith is too small, too weak, or too full of questions... meet them right where they sit. Thank you that you do not demand perfection before you draw near to us. Anchor them in your steady grace today. Let them know that even a tiny, bruised trust is safe in your hands. In Jesus' name, Amen. Go in peace today, my friend. You do not have to fake a thing.
